The Lagos State Government through its Ministry of Health has constituted a medical panel to investigate the circumstances that led to the death of Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara.

The Police boss died on August 29, 2024, at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) after a surgical operation.

Following allegations of impropriety levelled by family and colleagues of the deceased against medical personnel at LASUTH, the State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi in a statement issued on Saturday, August 31, announced the constitution of a medical panel to review the clinical circumstances that led to the death of the former police commissioner.

Abayomi said the panel has 7 days to submit its report and will be headed by the Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Prof Adetokunbo Fabanwo.

The statement read in part;

“In the light of the circumstances surrounding his passing, happening some hours after an apparently uneventful surgery,  the Ministry of Health, following a directive from Mr Governor, has constituted a medical panel to review the clinical circumstances leading to the death of the late CP Waheed Ayilara.

“This panel is headed by the Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Prof Adetokunbo Fabanwo. It will submit a comprehensive report on the matter in 7 days.

“We share the grief and understand the anxiety that this news may have caused and we assure the public that the Lagos State Government is committed to ensuring a thorough investigation.

“Once again, we commiserate with the family of the late Mr Ayilara, the Police the Government, and the people of Akwa Ibom.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of sorrow. May The Almighty give you the strength to go through this sorrowful time and bless the soul of Commissioner of Police Waheed Ayilara.”
