The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has commiserated with the family of late music icon, Mr. Victor Uwaifo, who died on Saturday, 28th of August, 2021.

A statement jointly signed on behalf of the Lagos State Government by the Honourable Commissioner, Mrs. Uzamat Akinbile-Yusuf and Special Adviser on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Solomon Bonu, recalled that the late Uwaifo was full of life as he performed during the non-stop entertainment event hosted by the State to celebrate Nigeria’s 60th anniversary.

The late guitarist, who died at a ripe age of 80 years, was described as an entertainer who understood the art and act of music.

The statement read: “Papa Uwaifo knows how to combine music with entertainment to thrill his audience. His performance during the 60th Independence anniversary of Nigeria at Lagos Theatre in Oregun was such that would forever be remembered by everyone present at that event. Seeing a man of almost 80 years perform the way he did at the event last year September, showed that the deceased enjoyed good health even in his old age”.

It described the death of Victor Uwaifo as a great loss to the entertainment industry, urging his family and associates to be comforted by the legacy of the icon as he mentored and groomed young and established entertainers.

A First Class graduate of Visual Arts from the University of Benin, UNIBEN, late Victor Uwaifo played the guitar with dexterity as well as kinetic dancing steps and served as Commissioner for Arts and Culture under Governor Lucky Igbinedion in Edo State. His tracks ‘Joromi’ and ‘Mammy Water’ were hits until his demise.

Victor Uwaifo was a multi-instrumentalist, great lyricist, melody maker and renowned artist.
