Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, has defended the decision to engage repentant offenders as public advocates for good conduct in the aviation sector, describing it as “a common practice all over the world.”

“For further clarification, it is common practice all over the world that a repentant offender is made to preach publicly against the exact conduct from which he has repented,” Keyamo said in a statement on Wednesday via X.

“It is akin to community service. It is not paid for and it is voluntary service.”

Responding to criticisms over the possible appointment of Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1) in such a role, Keyamo stressed that the ‘Ambassador’ title “is not a big position that comes with the perquisites of office. It is for free.”

Keyamo disclosed that the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) were also considering appointing Ms. Comfort Emmanson, recently released from prison, as an “Ambassador for good passenger conduct.”

“Whilst the usual suspects can continue to question our decisions on this issue, we firmly believe we have been fair to all,” the minister stated.
