The Katsina State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the State Bureau of Statistics, in collaboration with UNICEF have launch a multi-sectoral plan against seasonal flooding and cholera risks
The plan is in response to heightened environmental warnings for the 2026 rainy season.
The emergency collaborative session, hosted in neighboring Kano State, brings together representatives from all 34 Local Government Area Emergency Management Committees, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and key ministries to establish a unified, cross-sectoral disaster mitigation framework.
Data-driven projections from the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) have already designated several communities within Katsina as high-risk zones due to anticipated heavy downpours and rising river discharge patterns.
Highlighting the intersection of environmental and public health crises, the Statistician-General of Katsina State, Prof. Saifullahi Ibrahim, noted that historical data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control reveals a recurring spike in cholera cases within two to four weeks of major flooding events.
This vulnerability is compounded by regional infrastructure challenges, with recent surveys indicating that 38% of rural households in the state still rely heavily on unprotected wells and surface water.
To shift the state’s approach from reactive relief to proactive prevention, the Bureau of Statistics announced it is developing a comprehensive 2026 Flood and Cholera Vulnerability Atlas alongside a cross-sectoral early warning dashboard before the peak of the rainy season.
State emergency officials emphasized that seasonal flooding remains one of the most destabilizing recurring natural disruptions to the region, routinely displacing families, ruining agricultural yields, and destroying vital public infrastructure.
Stakeholders hope that mapping out these vulnerable zones and integrating environmental data with medical and budget resources will successfully safeguard lives, farmlands, and public funds over the coming months.
