The Kano State Government has inaugurated a high-powered committee on the profiling of NGOs and donor organizations to enhance oversight, ensure transparency, and align their activities with the state’s development priorities.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Faruk Ibrahim, highlighted the significant contributions of NGOs and donor organizations in sectors such as health, education, agriculture, governance, women and children’s development.
However, he noted increasing concerns over unregulated activities by some organizations, necessitating a structured monitoring framework.
This wa contained in a statement signed by Sani Abba Yola, Director of Special Duties at the Kano State Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs.
Abba Yola said the committee has been tasked with profiling all NGOs and donor organizations operating in the state, investigating their sources of funding, and assessing their intervention areas.
It will also recommend a regulatory framework to ensure alignment with the state’s development vision.
The committee has also been granted the authority to shut down offices of organizations engaging in suspicious activities, suspend operations of groups that violate Kano’s moral and religious values, and report unethical practices to security agencies for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The statement further disclosed that the committee is chaired by Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, while Mallam Tijjani Auwal, Commissioner for Religious Affairs, serves as Vice Chairman. Other members include Air Commodore Salisu Yushu’u Abdullahi, Special Adviser on Joint Security Services; Dr. Abba Sufi, Director General of the Hisbah Board; and representatives from the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health, security agencies, civil society organizations, and religious groups.
In his acceptance remarks, Waiya assured that the committee would operate with fairness, diligence, and strict adherence to its mandate, while working closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure a transparent and accountable regulatory process.
