The Kano State House of Assembly has officially withdrawn its notice of impeachment against former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam following his voluntary resignation from office.

The decision was taken during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Jibril Isma’il after lawmakers agreed that continuing the process was unnecessary.

Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yangurasa moved the motion for withdrawal, citing procedural provisions and the fact that the former deputy governor had already stepped down.

Speaking to journalists after the sitting, Hussaini said the Assembly had no basis to continue the impeachment process.

“We have withdrawn all charges against him, and the matter has been laid to rest. We will no longer pursue these offences because our role is limited to removing an official if found guilty. Since he has voluntarily resigned, how can we continue? We are not the EFCC or ICPC; our mandate has been fulfilled,” he said.

The impeachment process had earlier begun on March 5, 2026, over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust during Abdulsalam’s tenure as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs between 2023 and 2024.

The petition that triggered the proceedings was submitted by the executive, prompting the legislature to act under Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
