The Kano State House of Assembly has passed a bill aimed at regulating fee increases by private schools and improving oversight of the sector.
The bill, known as the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026, was approved on Monday after lawmakers completed its third reading and considered it during plenary.
Speaking after the bill was passed, the House Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini, said private primary and secondary schools must first discuss any proposed fee increase with their Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs).
He added that any approved increase “must not exceed 10 per cent” of the current tuition fees.
The bill, which is awaiting Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s approval, also states that the Executive Secretary of the Private and Voluntary Institutions Board must be a retired or experienced education professional who attained at least Grade Level 14 in the public service.
Mr Hussaini further said private schools would no longer be allowed to charge students more than 10 per cent above the official registration fees fixed by examination bodies such as WAEC, NECO and NBTE.
The amendment also reduces the statutory charges private schools pay to the board from 15 per cent to five per cent.
According to Mr Hussaini, the changes are part of efforts to improve the administration of private schools and raise education standards across Kano State
