The Department of State Services, DSS, has released Nura Idris, a Kaduna farmer, after an internal panel cleared him of alleged Boko Haram links and approved ₦3 million compensation.

Idris, a resident of Soba Local Government Area, had been in custody since June 2024 following his initial arrest by a different security agency.

In addition to his release, the Director-General of the DSS, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, approved a ₦3 million compensation package to assist Idris in rebuilding his business and settling back into civilian life.

Following his release, Idris expressed gratitude to the DSS leadership, noting that he was treated well while in detention.

His father, Yusuf Idris, also commended the agency for its compassion and stated that the funds would be used to support his son’s return to his agricultural livelihood.

This action is part of an ongoing internal review initiated by the DSS last year to re-examine long-standing and inherited detention cases.

According to security sources, the initiative aims to ensure that individuals found to be wrongfully held are exonerated and supported in their reintegration into society.

The review exercise has reportedly assessed over 30 cases to date, with more than ₦300 million disbursed in compensation to those found to be innocent.

The agency has previously overseen the release and compensation of several other detainees, including Abuja-based businesswoman Chineze Ozoadibe and multiple individuals cleared of alleged ties to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Security officials stated that the DSS is also providing medical and psychological support to many of those released to aid their transition.

By actively reviewing these cases and providing financial redress, the Service is aiming to bolster public trust and ensure that national security operations remain aligned with the protection of human rights and the dignity of Nigerian citizens.
