The Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has approved the recruitment of 23 qualified persons with disabilities (PWDs) into the state’s basic education system, in a move aimed at promoting inclusive education and equal opportunity.
The approval was granted by the Chairman of SUBEB, Professor Haruna, following consultations with stakeholders under the Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE) platform.
The engagement addressed concerns raised by PWDs who participated in the last teachers’ recruitment exercise but were not included among earlier beneficiaries.
SUBEB confirmed that the beneficiaries had earlier been nominated by the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Jigawa State Chapter, and have since reported to the board in compliance with official directives.
Reacting to the development, the Jigawa State Chairman of JONAPWD, Adamu Sha’aibu, commended Professor Haruna and the management of SUBEB for what he described as a landmark and inclusive decision.
Sha’aibu said the approval reflects fairness, responsiveness, and a commitment to inclusive governance, adding that it has restored hope and confidence among members of the disability community in the state.
He noted that the move aligns with global best practices on inclusion and the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.
JONAPWD also praised members of the PLANE platform and other stakeholders for their roles in advocating for the inclusion of PWDs in the recruitment process.
The association, however, appealed to the state government to consider other qualified PWDs who are yet to benefit from the exercise.
It reaffirmed its commitment to sustained engagement with relevant government institutions to ensure full inclusion in public sector employment.
The development is widely seen as a significant step toward promoting equity and strengthening inclusive education in Jigawa State.
