Jehovah’s Witnesses has reviewed their teachings on the use of blood in medical situations, now giving members more freedom to make some healthcare choices.

In a video posted on their website, leaders said the main rule against accepting someone else’s blood still stands.

However, members can now decide for themselves whether to use their own blood in medical treatments.

Gerrit Lösch, a member of the Governing Body, said the updated guidance is meant to help members handle complex medical situations while staying true to their faith. He explained that this clarification does not change the biblical principle behind the group’s stance on blood, but instead covers situations not directly mentioned in scripture.

Lösch said the Bible tells Christians to avoid blood, but it does not mention modern medical treatments that use a patient’s own blood. Because of this, members are now encouraged to decide for themselves about procedures where their blood is taken out, processed, stored, and then put back into their bodies.

He explained that during surgeries, diagnostic tests, or new treatments, each person should carefully consider their own conscience and beliefs.

“A Christian must decide for himself how his own blood will be handled,” he said. Some may choose to accept these procedures, while others may refuse them for personal convictions.

The clarification also notes that many medical practices involving blood are already widely accepted within the faith. These include blood testing, dialysis, and the use of heart-lung machines. These procedures usually involve moving or handling a patient’s own blood outside the body for a short time.

For many years, Jehovah’s Witnesses have been known for refusing blood transfusions. This comes from their interpretation of certain Bible passages, which they believe forbid using or consuming blood. Their belief has often attracted public attention, especially in serious medical cases where transfusions are usually recommended.

Despite this, the organisation maintains that it is not opposed to modern medicine.

In fact, many members actively seek out advanced “bloodless” medical treatments and surgical techniques that align with their religious principles while still ensuring effective care.

Observers say the latest clarification reflects a nuanced shift toward personal responsibility, allowing members to make informed healthcare decisions in consultation with medical professionals, while still upholding the faith’s foundational teachings.

Ultimately, the updated guidance highlights a balance between doctrine and individual conscience, preserving the prohibition against receiving another person’s blood, but acknowledging the complexities of contemporary medicine and the role of personal choice in navigating them.
