The Police Commissioner in Kano State, Hussaini Gumel, has directed Operational Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to intensify and implement robust patrols around all vulnerable primary and secondary schools, as well as all tertiary institutions in the state.

This directive was contained in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, a copy of which was made available to the press in Kano on Wednesday.

According to the statement, this measure aligns with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, aimed at ensuring the safety of schools under the Safe Schools Initiative.

The directive is geared towards improving the security of lives and property, especially the safety of schools and students. It aims to ensure the safety and security of students, teachers, and staff, thereby boosting the overall educational sector in the state.

“The intention of increasing the presence of police personnel in these areas is to further deter criminal activities and provide a secure environment conducive to learning and teaching,” the statement read.

Furthermore, the Commissioner of Police urges members of the public, particularly school administrators, teachers, parents, and students, to fully cooperate with the police and other security agencies and report any suspicious activities promptly. This collective effort is essential to creating a safe and secure educational system that nurtures the growth and development of future leaders.

He urged the people to continue reporting any suspicious movement of persons or items to the nearest police station.

In another development, the state commissioner of police commended the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and Transmission Commission of Nigeria (TCN) for their timely intervention in restoring power supply to the affected areas shortly after a fire gutted the TCN’s equipment last week.

He made this statement during his visit to KEDCO and TCN at the Dan-Angudi service station, where he inspected the damage done to the TCN.

Gumel expressed gratitude that the power supply was restored promptly to the affected areas. He noted that with the ongoing Ramadan fast, the timely restoration of power was crucial, as the prevailing heat in town could have caused untold hardship.

He commended KEDCO and TCN for a job well done, emphasising the importance of their swift action, especially during the Ramadan period and given the prevailing heat.
