The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, led members of the International Election Observation Programme (IEOP) team on a study visit to the South Korean National Assembly and the Constitutional Court of Korea.
The visit focused on Korea’s electoral legal framework and the role of the Legislature and Judiciary in enhancing democratic credibility and electoral integrity.
At the National Assembly, the delegation was briefed on legislative oversight of elections and mechanisms that promote transparency. At the Constitutional Court, officials highlighted how judicial review of electoral disputes has strengthened public trust in the system.
A senior official of the National Assembly said Korea’s democratic progress was built on “institutional independence, citizen participation, and continuous legal reform.” He added that sharing these experiences with international partners would help strengthen democracy globally.
The team also toured the National Assembly Museum and Constitutional Court Museum to understand Korea’s democratic evolution.
Prof. Amupitan said the engagement would enrich INEC’s reforms aimed at deepening Nigeria’s electoral process.
