President Mohammadu Buhari has again come under intense attack over the sustained payment of fuel subsidy without recourse to the National Assembly for appropriation.
The dethroned Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi ll said on Tuesday that the constitution gives room for the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari for paying millions in fuel subsidies without appropriation urging the National Assembly to commence the impeachment process on the President.
Sanusi Lamido reveals that the secret behind petrol subsidy in Nigeria is because petrol imports figures were allegedly inflated when global oil prices went up during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan and the regime of President Mohammadu Buhari.
Former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi made the allegation when he spoke virtually yesterday at a panel session during the 27th National Economic Summit in Abuja, said the subsidy on petrol was responsible for the inflated figures.
Sanusi said, “until May 2016, when the Federal Government announced a new petrol price band of 135 nairas to 145 nairas per litre of petrol, private marketers imported petrol into the country and were paid subsidy claims by the government in order to keep the pump price lower than the expected open market price of the product.
“Every year, the government spends millions upon millions of dollars on fuel subsidies without appropriation.
“Under the constitution, this is enough ground to impeach the President. “But nobody is holding them to account.
The National Assembly is not holding them to account,” Mr Sanusi was quoted by Vanguard to have said at the Nigeria Economic Summit in Abuja on Tuesday.
The former CBN governor said the federal government’s populist approach was hurting the nation. He implored the Buhari-led regime to be courageous enough to take the right decisions, saying the country was running a populist instead of a developmental state.
