Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the once-powerful son and heir apparent of the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, has reportedly been assassinated.
The news was announced late Tuesday, though details remain unconfirmed and conflicting.
According to initial reports cited by the Libyan News Agency, the head of Gaddafi’s political team confirmed the death. His sister reportedly stated on Libyan television that he died near the Libya-Algeria border, but did not provide details on the cause of death.
Libyan media is currently circulating competing accounts, and the circumstances of his reported death remain unclear. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement.
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, 53, was long considered the most influential figure in Libya after his father, who ruled for 42 years until being overthrown and killed in the 2011 uprising. He was instrumental in Libya’s diplomatic outreach to the West in the 2000s.
Following the regime’s collapse, he was captured and imprisoned for nearly six years by a militia in Zintan. He faced accusations of playing a central role in the violent suppression of anti-government protests in 2011, leading the International Criminal Court to seek his trial for crimes against humanity
