No fewer than 4,885 households have been destroyed by flood in Ogun State in recent times, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said.
NEMA’s Director-General, Mustapha Ahmed, made this known in Abeokuta, Wednesday, while presenting relief materials to the Ogun State government for onward distribution to victims of flooding across the State.
Represented by the Director of Special Duties, Dr Bandele Onimode, Ahmed maintained that the incident had claimed lives, displaced people, brought about loss of means of livelihood and socio-economic dislocation.
The NEMA boss narrated that the flooding had destroyed several houses in Ogun, while hectares of cultivated farmlands had been submerged.
According to him, the world economic meltdown and pre-harvest food shortages had further exposed the vulnerability of those affected by the deluge.
The South West Zonal office of NEMA had in collaboration with relevant agencies of the State government conducted damage/loss assessments to guide relief interventions to persons in need of support in Ogun.
“The result of the assessment indicated that 4,885 households were affected by the flood,” the NEMA DG said.
He stated that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the release of 12,000 metric tonnes of assorted grains from the National Strategic Reserve for distribution to flood affected States.
The items donated included: 1,000 bags of rice, beans, salt, maize, tomato paste, vegetable oil, seasoning cubes, nylon mats, mosquito nets, soap, garri, guinea brocade, adult and children’s clothes and sorghum
