…..Warns Consumers Against Buying Products With False Labels

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, has directed manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers to immediately withdraw from sale all consumer goods that do not meet mandatory labelling requirements.*

The directive, issued on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, followed findings from market surveillance, routine inspections and quality assurance activities across the country.

According to the Commission, many products in circulation lack essential information such as production dates, expiry or best-before dates, batch numbers, manufacturer details, ingredient lists, allergen information and country of origin. Others bear misleading, deceptive or illegible labels.

Citing Sections 17(p),(w),(x), 114, 116, 123 and 125 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, FCCPA, 2018, the FCCPC said it is mandated to promote consumer safety by ensuring strict compliance with labelling standards set by regulatory authorities including the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON, and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC.

The Commission warned that deceptive or incomplete labelling violates consumers’ right to information and exposes them to health, safety and economic risks.

Businesses that continue to sell non-compliant products, it said, risk regulatory enforcement action.

The FCCPC also advised consumers to examine product labels carefully before purchase and to avoid items with missing, altered, poor-quality labels or false claims.

Members of the public with complaints on suspected cases of non-compliance have been urged to report through the Commission’s official channels.
