The Labour Party, LP, governorship candidate in Lagos during the 2023 elections, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has formally defected to the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

The declaration, which took place in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos on Saturday, was nearly marred by an alleged attempt by suspected political thugs to disrupt the gathering.

Police operatives were also spotted at the venue, raising unease among attendees.

Addressing supporters after receiving the ADC flag, Rhodes-Vivour clarified that the event was not a campaign rally but a constitutional political meeting.

He vowed to seek clarification from the Lagos State Commissioner of Police on why officers were deployed, questioning whether they were there to protect the event or intimidate participants.

Explaining his defection, the former LP flagbearer said his choice of ADC was motivated by the urgent need to strengthen collaboration among opposition forces.

“This coalition is about rescuing Nigeria. Since the 2023 elections, I have consistently maintained that the opposition cannot afford to remain fragmented.

“To unseat those who wield power through thuggery, violence, and intimidation, we must build a robust alliance that reflects the will of the people,” he said.

Rhodes-Vivour warned that if Nigeria’s political space continued to be dominated by such tactics, governance would remain ineffective and citizens would remain voiceless.

Expressing optimism about his new political home, he added:

“I am happy to join the ADC family. My prayer is that God grants our leaders the wisdom and courage to chart a new course for this country through unity and purposeful leadership.”
