The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday moved to forfeit the Maitama, Abuja residence of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN.
Led by Folarin Dare, heavily armed EFCC personnel were said to have arrived the property in at least five buses.
The reportedly barricaded the road leading to Malami’s residence.
It was gathered that access to the property, located at No. 2 Koranakh Close, off Amazon Street in Maitama, Abuja, was blocked as the operatives sealed off the area.
The development is said to be connected to an ongoing investigation into alleged financial improprieties on the part of the ex-AGF.
EFCC operatives, accompanied by armed security personnel on Monday visited the property to mark the properties, an exercise that drew resistance from Malami and individuals present at the scene.
In a video circulating online, the former minister is seen confronting an official believed to be part of the EFCC team, demanding to see a valid court order authorising the move to mark and possibly take over the property.
The official maintained that the Commission was acting within its powers, insisting the property was already under a forfeiture order.
Malami, however, disputed the claim, arguing that any such order had lapsed and again challenged the official to produce documentation backing the action.
During the operation, one of the affected properties was visibly marked with the inscription: “Restrained order EFCC keep off.”
