The Edo State Taskforce has apprehended two individuals for allegedly engaging in illegal revenue collection activities at the Third Junction in Benin City.
The suspects, identified as Osasere Amadin and Irahbor Destiny, were taken into custody on Monday, June 22, 2026, following intelligence reports concerning the harassment and extortion of motorists in the area.
The arrests were confirmed by the Taskforce’s Station Officer, Rufus Johnbull, who stated that the operation was part of a broader government crackdown on unauthorized toll and levy collection, which has been officially banned by Governor Monday Okpebholo.
According to Johnbull, the taskforce conducted surveillance at the scene after receiving complaints that drivers were being systematically extorted. He reiterated the government’s commitment to eliminating these illicit activities, warning that enforcement efforts will be intensified across the state to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The prevalence of such illegal collections has long been a source of frustration for local transport operators. One driver, speaking on the condition of anonymity, described a climate of intimidation, noting that refusal to pay various levies often leads to vehicle impoundment and physical assault.
During the subsequent parade of the suspects, conflicting accounts emerged regarding their activities. While Irahbor Destiny admitted to the charges and claimed he was acting under the directives of a local vigilante group’s Chief Security Officer, the second suspect, Osasere Amadin, denied the allegations. Amadin claimed he was at the location solely to solicit financial assistance for his hospitalized child and denied any involvement in the collection of revenue.
The Edo State Taskforce has urged commuters and drivers to continue their daily operations, assuring the public that it will remain vigilant in safeguarding the city from illegal revenue collectors.
