Media personality, Daddy Freeze, has explained why he wore black to the service of songs held in honour of late Nollywood actor, Alex Ekubo, despite the all-white dress code stated on the invitation.

Daddy Freeze and his wife had come under criticism after they appeared at the event in black, a choice many social media users described as insensitive and disrespectful to the family’s request.

The service of songs was held in Lagos on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.

Reacting to the backlash during an Instagram Live session, Daddy Freeze admitted that he was wrong to have gone against the dress code but insisted that it was not intentional.

According to him, he did not notice the part of the invitation where guests were asked to wear white.

“Yes, I was wrong to have gone with black, but I honestly did not see that part of the invite. My eyes did not go there,” he said.

Daddy Freeze, however, said his choice of black was influenced by his personal understanding of mourning, adding that he did not see the ceremony as a celebration.

He said the death of Alex Ekubo was too painful to be treated as a moment of rejoicing.

“For me, he was not going to glory. He was a tragic loss until we were able to wrap our head around that,” he said.

The broadcaster also rejected the argument that Alex had completed his purpose on earth, saying the actor was too young to die.

“I agree that he has gone to a better place, but I just don’t agree that he needed to go now. He had no business dying,” he said.

Daddy Freeze said he could not understand why people were presenting the actor’s death as though it was a normal celebration of life.

“So for me, it was sorrowful because somebody who was that young, at least compared to me, had no business dying. Can we stop being sentimental and be honest?” he added.

He further explained that in his own tradition, black is commonly worn to funerals, which made him believe he was properly dressed for a mourning event.

“The part of Nigeria that I come from, na black or traditional that they wear to funeral. I did not understand the white. I just thought that we were mourning,” he said.

Daddy Freeze apologised to those offended by his outfit, insisting that he did not deliberately disrespect the family’s instruction.

“I’m very sorry if you feel offended,” he said.

His comments have continued to divide social media users, with some accepting his explanation while others maintained that he should have respected the dress code set by the family.
