The leadership crisis rocking the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano took a new turn on Tuesday as a Kano State High Court halted moves by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and restored the dissolved state, local government and ward executives.

Justice Nasiru Saminu, in an ex parte ruling, nullified the dissolution of the party’s executive councils in Kano and restrained the NWC from taking any further action affecting the party’s leadership structure in the state pending the hearing and determination of a motion on notice.

The court also ordered all parties to maintain the status quo ante as of December 30, 2025, the period before the NWC announced the dissolution of the Kano State, local government and ward executives.

The suit, marked K/06/2026, was filed by Abdullahi Zubairu Imam and five others on behalf of the NNPP executive committees in the 44 local government areas of Kano State. The plaintiffs challenged the decision of the NWC to dissolve the party structures in the state.

In the interim injunction, Justice Saminu restrained the NNPP, its National Working Committee, agents, privies, ad-hoc committees or any persons acting on its instructions from appointing caretaker committees at the state, local government or ward levels in Kano State or taking any further steps relating to the matter.

The court further granted the plaintiffs leave to serve court processes on the NNPP at its national secretariat located at 11 Mahatma Gandhi Street, Area 11, Garki, Abuja, which is outside the jurisdiction of the Kano court. The order was signed by Abba Sa’ad, Registrar of the court.

The NNPP crisis in Kano followed the suspension of the party’s state chairman, Hon. Hashim Dungurawa, after which the NWC announced the dissolution of the party’s executive councils across the state and named Abdullahi Abiya as acting chairman.

With the court ruling, the dissolution has been set aside, effectively restoring the party’s existing structures in Kano pending the substantive hearing of the case.
