Two Kannywood actors, Amina Uba Hassan and Adam Garba have been suspended by the Kano State Censorship Board over the release of a promotional video, the officials have deemed “inappropriate”.
In the footage, the actors were seen in matching outfits, sharing a lighthearted, jovial moment.
In one scene, Garba is seen consoling Hassan in a manner reminiscent of a movie drama. While seemingly harmless to some, the footage quickly sparked outrage among residents.
Reacting to the video, Abba El-Mustapha, the board’s executive secretary, in a statement, explained that the video was judged to be “contrary to moral standards and public decency in the state”.
He explained that the suspension is intended to enforce discipline, support traditional values, and ensure that all film productions comply with Kano’s strict rules.
The statement also said that starting now, Hassan and Garba cannot take part in any film-related activities in the state for the next twelve months.
“The two actors were suspended after appearing in a video that generated controversy among residents of Kano State over alleged indecent content,” the statement reads in part.
“The suspension bars the actors from participating in any film-related activities in Kano State for one year.”
