The Lagos state governor Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has appealed to Lagosians to bury their dead or risk the government conducting a mass burial on their behalf.
The governor made this appeal during his 8th update on the COVID-19 pandemic where he mentioned that mortuaries across the state were congested .
He clarified that the congestion is not associated with COVID-19 deaths but as a result of churches not conducting funerals during the Lent period and that the lockdown also inhibited families from going to buy their dead.
The governor noted that the government was allowing these burials because they are not COVID-19 related and that most of them occurred before the pandemic
Sanwo-Olu noted that even though funerals will be allowed, no parties or reception would be allowed before, during or after the burial. He then warned that not more than 20 persons should attend such burials and emphasized that they must all wear masks, which he said was now compulsory in the Lagos state.
In a similar development, Governor Sanwo-Olu has ordered the release of 209 inmates from various prisons across the state noting that this is to decongest the facilities as necessitated by the covid-19 outbreak.
Inmates that would benefit from this release includes those over 60 years of age, those who have less than six months to end their terms or have completed over 95 per cent of their terms.
