Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is currently undergoing medical treatment in London, multiple sources have confirmed.
The 82-year-old, who concluded his two-term presidency on 29 May 2023, has been in the United Kingdom since April 2025, according to Premium Times.
Sources close to the Buhari family revealed that the former president initially traveled to London for a routine medical check-up.
However, his condition reportedly worsened, necessitating extended treatment. Conflicting accounts exist regarding the onset of his illness, with some sources claiming he fell ill in Nigeria before being flown out, while others maintain he became unwell after arriving in London.
Garba Shehu, Buhari’s longtime spokesperson, confirmed the development in a statement to Premium Times.
“Following your enquiry, I wish to confirm that former President Muhammadu Buhari is unwell and is receiving treatment in the UK.
“He had traveled for his annual medical check-up but became ill during his stay. I am pleased to inform you that he is responding well to treatment, and we pray for his swift recovery.”
Details regarding the nature of Buhari’s ailment and the hospital where he is receiving care remain undisclosed.
