President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday appointed a former Inspector-General of Police Solomon Arase, as the chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC).
This was revealed in a letter at plenary on Tuesday by the Senate President Ahmad Lawan.
The appointment is subject to the approval by the senate.
The president’s request to the senate is in tandem with Sections 153 (1) and 154 (1) of the constitution as amended.
Mr Arase will succeed Musiliu Smith, also a former IGP, if eventually confirmed.
Mr Smith resigned last year after a long battle with IGP Usman Baba Alkali over recruitment of police constables.
Mr Arase was appointed IGP in 2015 by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
He took over from Suleiman Abba, who was sacked over alleged disloyalty.
Before his appointment as IGP, Arase was head of the topmost intelligence gathering unit of the Nigerian police, the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau.
He was born on June 21, 1956 in Owan West Local Government, Edo state.
He attended Ahmadu Bello University, where he graduated with Political Science degree in 1980.
He also obtained another bachelor’s degree in Law from University of Benin, as well as Masters from University of Lagos.
He was recruited into the Nigerian Police on December 1, 1981.
