Insecurity: IGP Launches 14-day Ops to Dislodge Criminals in Benue

It started as a simple conversation; one I expected to pass without incident. I mentioned to my 56-year-old British colleague that a former Nigerian president had died in the UK over the weekend. His immediate response?

“Wow, was he on exile here?”

A reasonable assumption, perhaps, given Africa’s history of leaders fleeing abroad. But no; I clarified that the former president had been sick.

Then came the question that stopped me cold:

“So why didn’t he go back home to get good treatment?”

I explained, patiently, that he had come to the UK for better treatment.

At this point, my colleague’s face twisted in confusion. He stared at me, as if waiting for the punchline to a joke.

“Why are you looking at my face?” I asked.

His reply left me speechless:

“That means you only have better colleges than us, you don’t have good hospitals.”

The Irony That Stings

Let that sink in.

A British man, living in a country with a revered National Health Service (NHS), just implied that Nigeria—a nation often stereotyped for poor infrastructure—produces such brilliant doctors that they must be the ones keeping British hospitals afloat.

And yet, when a Nigerian president falls ill, he flies to the UK.

The contradiction is staggering.

The Unspoken Hierarchy of Global Perception

This exchange reveals a subconscious hierarchy in how the world views nations:

Education vs. Infrastructure

Nigeria is acknowledged (even begrudgingly) for its sharp minds—doctors, engineers, and scholars who excel globally. Yet, the assumption remains that the country itself cannot retain or utilize that talent effectively.

Medical Tourism as a Status Symbol

Wealthy Nigerians (and Africans at large) often seek treatment abroad, reinforcing the stereotype that local healthcare is inadequate. But if the doctors in his hospitals are Nigerian… what does that say about where true expertise lies?

The West as the Default “Solution”

My colleague’s confusion stemmed from an unshakable belief that of course the UK would be the better option. The idea that a leader would choose Britain over his homeland was natural to him—but the reason behind it (lack of local trust) didn’t compute.

The Bitter Truth About Brain Drain

Nigeria does have talented doctors. But systemic failures—poor funding, corruption, inadequate facilities—drive them abroad. The UK, US, and Canada benefit from this exodus, then turn around and act surprised when African leaders follow the same talent pipeline.

My colleague’s words were unintentionally revealing:

  • “All the good doctors here are Nigerians.”

Yes. And why is that?

A Moment of Mutual Bewilderment

By the end of the conversation, we were both baffled; him by the idea that a country with “good colleges” couldn’t keep its hospitals functioning, and me by the sheer cognitive dissonance of his logic.

It was a microcosm of a larger, uncomfortable truth: the world still sees Africa through a lens of contradictions—admiring its people while pitying its systems, praising its professionals while doubting its institutions.

And in that moment, all I could think was:

When will the world stop being surprised?

Final Reflection: Who Really Has the Better System?

If Nigeria’s best doctors are saving lives in Britain, but Nigeria’s leaders must fly to Britain to be saved… what does that say about which country truly has the “better” healthcare system?

Perhaps the real question isn’t about hospitals or colleges—but about why the world remains so comfortable with such a broken status quo.

Food for thought.
