The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State has condemned Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s defection from the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a betrayal of the mandate freely given to him by the people of the state.

The party said the governor’s action undermines the trust of Plateau voters who elected him on the PDP platform and accused him of placing personal ambition above collective interest.

Speaking on Friday, the PDP State Publicity Secretary, Choji Felix Dalyop, confirmed that the party had received Governor Mutfwang’s resignation letter through the PDP chairman of Ampang West Ward in Mangu Local Government Area.

Dalyop said the PDP was neither consulted nor formally informed by the governor before the defection, contrary to claims in some quarters.

“Governor Mutfwang’s action is a slap in the face of the people of Plateau State who trusted him against all odds, and a clear betrayal of the party’s ideals,” Dalyop said.

According to him, there are no constitutional or moral grounds to justify the governor’s resignation from the PDP and subsequent defection to the APC without vacating his seat.

The PDP described the move as “political opportunism” that subverts the will of the electorate and places personal interest above the collective good of the people.

The party urged residents of Plateau State to hold the governor accountable for his action and to reject any attempt by him to seek re-election on the platform of another party.

Dalyop also warned the Plateau State chapter of the APC against embracing Mutfwang, saying the party would be complicit in what he termed a betrayal of public trust.

He added that such an action runs contrary to democratic principles of integrity, accountability and respect for the electorate.

The PDP, however, called on its members and supporters to remain calm, resolute and focused, assuring them that the party remains united and prepared for future elections.

“The PDP remains strong and committed to delivering good governance and democratic dividends to the people of Plateau State,” Dalyop said, stressing that the party would not be deterred by what it described as temporary setbacks.
