The Benue State Police Command on Monday hosted state chairmen of political parties, flag bearers and security agencies to a peace accord signing ceremony aimed at promoting peaceful political activities across the state.
The engagement held in Makurdi brought together political leaders, candidates, heads of security agencies and other stakeholders who reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful campaigns, respect for the rule of law and protection of lives and property.
Addressing the gathering, Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus C. N. Nwadiogbu, urged political leaders and candidates to ensure their supporters conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly.
He warned against recruitment or use of political thugs, cult groups and criminal elements to intimidate opponents or disrupt lawful activities.
The accord was subsequently signed by participating parties and candidates, signifying collective commitment to reject violence, respect rights of other actors and cooperate with security agencies.
CP Nwadiogbu assured of professionalism and impartiality, promising adequate security for all lawful political activities, and urged stakeholders to maintain effective communication with security agencies on rallies and campaigns.
