The Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC Mr. Peter Obi, has urged the Federal Government to demonstrate greater commitment to securing lives and property in Benue State following deadly attacks in Otukpo-Nobi and Efeyi-Ugboju communities.
In a statement on Friday, Obi said he visited Otukpo-Nobi, where over 10 persons were either killed or declared missing, with several others injured and hospitalised.
He also visited Efeyi-Ugboju, where over 13 persons were reportedly killed and many others injured. While in the area, Obi said he was informed that 14 persons had been kidnapped earlier that morning along Ankpechi Road.
The former Anambra governor joined community members to pray for the repose of the souls of the departed at a mass burial site. He also visited victims receiving treatment in hospital to empathise with them and pray for their recovery.
“Having visited, seen, and spoken with those affected, I urge the Federal Government to demonstrate a greater commitment to securing the lives and property of citizens and to closing the ungoverned spaces that have become breeding grounds for insecurity,” he said.
Obi added that the primary purpose of government is the security and welfare of citizens, and that when government fails in that duty, “it must be reminded of that sacred obligation.”
He concluded with prayers for the victims: “May the souls of the departed continue to rest in perfect peace. Amen.”
