The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has declared an indefinite strike at Niger Delta University, NDU, and Bayelsa Medical University, BMU, over the alleged failure of the Bayelsa State Government to implement agreements reached with lecturers.
The action followed separate enlarged congresses held at the institutions’ campuses in Amassoma and Yenagoa. The NDU chapter said lecturers would withdraw their services until their demands are met.
ASUU listed its demands to include the implementation of a Collective Bargaining Agreement signed with the state government on December 23, 2025, which was scheduled to take effect in January 2026.
The union also cited 19 months of outstanding arrears from the 25 per cent and 35 per cent wage awards. It said the balance remained after the government paid six months of the accumulated arrears.
ASUU further put the outstanding Consolidated Academic and Allied Salary Structure, CATA, demand for academic staff across the state’s three universities at ₦336,936,294.87.
The union said it had earlier suspended industrial action after reaching an agreement with the government, but resumed the strike after repeated engagements failed to resolve the outstanding issues.
