Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has responded to the growing controversy surrounding the shutdown of Badeggi Radio Station by the Niger State Government.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago had ordered the closure of the station and the confiscation of its broadcasting license, alleging unethical broadcasting and incitement against the government.
The move has sparked widespread criticism and public outcry from groups, individuals and bodies
Addressing the situation in a statement over the weekend, the Minister of Information acknowledged the concerns raised by stakeholders and assured the public that the issue would be handled impartially.
The statement, signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Rabiu Ibrahim, emphasized that the suspension of broadcasting licenses falls under the legal authority of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
“While acknowledging the concerns raised, the Ministry notes that the suspension of broadcasting licenses falls within the purview of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), as stipulated by law.
” In light of this, the Ministry welcomes the decision of the Niger State Government to formally report the perceived ‘unethical behavior’ of Badegi FM to the NBC for resolution,” the statement read.
The minister also urged all parties involved to remain calm while the appropriate processes are followed through the NBC.
“The Minister appeals to all parties to remain calm, assuring that the NBC has the necessary mechanisms to resolve the issue in a fair and impartial manner.”
