Sudan’s ruling council head Abdel Fattah al-Burhan announced on Monday a state of emergency across the country and the dissolution of the transitional sovereign council and the government.
Earlier, soldiers arrested most of the members of Sudan’s cabinet on Monday and the military chief dissolved the transitional government, while opponents of the takeover took to the streets where gunfire and injuries were reported.
The UK’s special envoy for Sudan and South Sudan, Robert Fairweather, tweeted that military arrests of civilian leaders was “a betrayal of the revolution, the transition and the Sudanese people”.
The US, UN, EU and Arab League have also expressed deep concern.
Khartoum airport is now closed, and international flights are suspended.
The coup is coming about a month after the government of President Alpha Conde of Guinea was toppled.
