The Nigerian Army has announced a major recruitment drive aimed at enlisting 28,000 new soldiers in a strategic move to bolster security.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, made the announcement during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday ahead of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration.
Represented by Major General Bamidele Alabi, the Chief of Policy and Plans, the Army chief confirmed that the expansion in manpower is being supported by the inauguration of a new training depot in Amasiri Edda, Ebonyi State. This facility is the third of its kind dedicated to the training of new recruits.
“Manpower is as important as the equipment required to fight insecurity,” General Shaibu stated.
“To this end, we have expanded our recruitment scope by establishing another training depot, which will help stem the tide of insecurity across the country.”
Beyond recruitment, the Army is undergoing a broader restructuring. According to the Chief of Army Staff, the military has established additional brigades and units to address deployment gaps and respond more effectively to evolving security threats, including terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.
These operational shifts are being bolstered by the induction of modern combat platforms and increased investment in technology and infrastructure.
The Army also emphasized a “Soldier-First” culture, focusing on improved personnel welfare and professionalism. General Shaibu highlighted that the military’s recent operations have significantly degraded the capabilities of various criminal groups, including Boko Haram, ISWAP, and other insurgent elements.
The announcement comes as the Nigerian Army prepares for its annual week-long celebration, which will include religious services, community medical outreaches, and educational engagements in schools.
The celebration will culminate on July 6 in Port Harcourt, coinciding with the African Land Forces Forum 2026, where military leaders and defense experts from across the continent will convene to discuss advanced defense strategies and regional security cooperation.
