Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, has tasked contractors working on the Lagos – Ibadan rail project to ensure completion of all stations including Apapa Station by December.

The Minister stated this during his routine tour/inspection of the project on Wednesday.

Amaechi was accompanied on the inspection by top management staff of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).

Speaking with journalist ,the Minister said the contractors have assured them that by the end of September 3 stations will be ready while the minor stations will be ready by October ending.

Amaechi however implore them to deliver on their timeline and ensure that all the stations are ready by December so the route can become fully operational.

“I’ve tasked the contractors on the Lagos-Ibadan rail line to ensure completion of all the stations by December including Apapa station which started late, so we can commission and make that route fully operational. They’ve given us a timeline.”

The Minister however appealed to traders selling along the rail line to desist as it is unsafe to move around the tracks.

“As for people trading along the rail line, please move far away from the tracks. It is unsafe to peddle around the tracks. We saw a market at Agege encroaching into the rail line. As soon as we start running, they have to give way.”

The inspection kicked off from the Ido station, Lagos stopping at various stations along the project line to get updates from the contractors on the quality and progress report of the construction work.

The rail tracks for the 156km rail project have been completed but the stations are still under construction.

The Lagos-Ibadan railway, one of the major projects embarked on by the Federal Government, is being handled by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
