A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Pius Akinyelure, has distanced himself from reports claiming he granted a media interview on the party’s internal political arrangements, describing the publication as false and misleading.
According to associates who spoke on his behalf on Tuesday, Akinyelure did not authorise, grant, or participate in any of such interview and urged party members as well as the general public to disregard the claims being circulated in his name.
He reaffirmed that the party’s established position remains the adoption of consensus candidates where stakeholders are able to reach mutual agreement.
He added that where consensus proves impossible, the party would proceed with primary elections in line with its constitution and democratic principles.
Akinyelure also warned individuals and groups against using his name to push personal or political interests, stressing that he sees himself as a father figure to all and would not take actions capable of creating division within the party.
He maintained that the approach of promoting consensus where possible, and primaries where necessary, is intended to preserve unity while also ensuring fairness and transparency in the party’s candidate selection process.
He therefore called on party faithful to remain calm, avoid misinformation, and stay committed to due process as preparations continue for forthcoming electoral activities.
