Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has ordered a comprehensive technical investigation into the collapse of a two-storey building at Baale Road, Ajuwon, in Ifo Local Government Area.
The building which collapsed on Monday afternoon following a severe thunderstorm, claimed one life, while several occupants narrowly escaped.
Preliminary findings by a multi-agency team revealed that the structure suffered a catastrophic structural failure, causing the lower floors to sink into the ground, with only portions of the upper slab remaining visible above the debris.
Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred at about 3:00 p.m., shortly after a heavy downpour accompanied by intense thunderstorms and a reported lightning strike. Two women and their children escaped after noticing signs of distress, while a young man sustained minor injuries.
Emergency responders, including officials of the Ogun State Safety Office, Fire Service, Ministries of Environment, Physical Planning, Works, the Nigeria Police, and Ifo LG officials, mobilised to the scene. Contractors in the Akute-Alagbole and Agbado axis also deployed heavy equipment within 10 minutes.
After controlled excavation, one deceased victim was recovered. Identity was yet to be confirmed at press time.
Governor Abiodun directed specialists from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Ogun State Building Control Agency, and the Building Production Management and Material Testing Agency to assess the collapsed structure, soil conditions, materials, and adjoining buildings.
The Governor expressed condolences to the bereaved and commended responders for saving lives. He assured support for victims and warned that anyone who violated building regulations would be prosecuted.
The state also thanked the Lagos State Government for support during the emergency response.
The government urged developers and residents to obtain statutory approvals and adhere strictly to building plans, warning that use of substandard materials poses grave risks.
