Dignitaries, Cultural troupes and visitors from across the world converged at the historic Aafin Oyo on August 15 to celebrate the 2026 World Sango Festival.
The festival honours Sango, the revered Yoruba deity of thunder and lightning, and remains one of the most significant expressions of Yoruba spirituality and identity, especially for the people of Oyo.
This year’s edition featured royal processions, Bata and Dundun drumming, masquerade performances, music, dance and ancestral storytelling that reflect centuries of Yoruba history.
Speaking at the event, the Director/CEO of the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, Mr. Olulowo Idowu Johnson, said the festival highlights Sango’s enduring legacy as a symbol of strength, justice and cultural pride.
He noted that beyond its spiritual importance, the celebration promotes unity, boosts tourism and enhances global appreciation of African heritage.
The Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture Troupe also delivered a special performance, showcasing Lagos artistry and the cultural ties between Lagos and Oyo to an international audience.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to preserving and promoting Yoruba culture through strategic partnerships and cultural exchange.
The 2026 World Sango Festival once again reinforced Oyo as the spiritual home of Sango worship and a leading destination for cultural tourism in Nigeria.
