The African Democratic Congress, ADC, in Rivers State says no fewer than eight prominent individuals have indicated interest in contesting for the governorship position on the platform of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party described the development as evidence of what it called growing political momentum and increasing public confidence in the ADC as a platform for credible leadership and people-oriented governance.

In a statement signed by the Rivers State Chairman-Elect of the party, Dr. Chukwudi Dimkpa, the ADC said the level of political interest being generated within the party in Rivers State has been unprecedented.

According to the statement, those who have shown interest in the governorship race include a former Secretary to the Rivers State Government; a former member of the House of Representatives and former Executive Director, Marine and Operations, of the Nigerian Ports Authority; another former member of the House of Representatives and former Chairman of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA); a former Commissioner for Employment Generation; a former Chief Medical Director of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH); a renowned architect; as well as several private sector leaders and entrepreneurs.

The party also disclosed that several other qualified individuals have expressed interest in contesting for Senate, House of Representatives and State Assembly seats across the state under the ADC platform.

The statement further linked the rising interest in the party to the recent declaration by former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, to contest for the office of President of Nigeria on the platform of the ADC.

The party said Amaechi’s declaration represents “another major milestone in the growing national momentum around the party.”

“This development sends a very clear message: ADC is no longer viewed as an alternative party. ADC is now increasingly being seen as the vehicle for the future,” the statement read.

The ADC added that the influx of experienced politicians, professionals and technocrats into the party reflects a growing belief among Nigerians that the country needs a fresh political direction driven by competence, accountability and inclusive governance.

The party maintained that it remains committed to internal democracy, transparent processes, peaceful political engagement and issue-based campaigns as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.

“This momentum is organic. This momentum is real. And this momentum is growing every day,” the statement stated.
