The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has revealed that over 70 percent of food exported from Nigeria are rejected.

The Director General of the Agency, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye disclosed this in a statement on Sunday by Sayo Akintola, the resident media consultant to NAFDAC.

The DG during the official commissioning of the agency’s office complex for the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos lamented the deplorable state of export trade facilities for regulatory agencies in Nigeria.

Adeyeye blamed NAFDAC Export warehouses within the international airport as the primary reason for the continuous rejection of Nigerian exports abroad.

She stressed that the agency would continue to collaborate effectively with other security agencies such as the Police, Interpol, State Security Services, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Services and others to improve the country’s quality of foods exported.

“NAFDAC collaborates with Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Services to ensure that due diligence is done because over 70 per cent of the products that leave our ports get rejected.

“Considering the money spent on getting those products out of the country, it is a double loss for both the exporter and the country”, she stated.
