The Chairman of the Jigawa Tanker Explosion Investigation Panel, Hafizu Inuwa has reported that the tragic explosion in Majiya town claimed 209 lives and left 99 others injured.

The incident occurred on October 14 when a fuel tanker exploded, causing widespread devastation.

In response, Governor Umar Namadi established a 25-member investigative panel to determine the causes of the explosion and propose preventive measures for the future.

Inuwa presented the panel’s findings to the governor in Dutse on Wednesday, revealing that 38 of the injured are still hospitalized, while 61 others have been discharged.

The blast also affected 167 families.

The explosion resulted in significant property damage, with losses running into millions of Naira.

Inuwa attributed the disaster to several factors, including damaged speed bumps and potholes near the scene, along with night driving and speeding.

The report suggests that the fire may have been ignited by a combination of factors, such as friction between metallic containers and hard surfaces, as victims were attempting to scoop up the spilled fuel.

The panel recommended regular inspections and stricter enforcement of safety protocols by petroleum transporters and articulated vehicle operators.

Other recommendations include upgrading emergency response centers, establishing trauma and burns units at health facilities, and creating a road traffic control agency.

For vulnerable victims or their families, the panel advised that the government provide social protection and enroll them in the Danmodi Care Programme.

Inuwa commended the state government for its prompt response, including providing emotional and psychological support to the affected community.

Governor Namadi, in his response, assured that the government would implement the panel’s recommendations to enhance public safety and protect the welfare of the citizens. (NAN)
