Opposition party leaders have held consultations with five presidential candidates ahead of 2027 general elections as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation and advance coordinated opposition strategy.
Consultations involved national chairmen and national secretaries of six political parties: African Democratic Congress, ADC, Allied Peoples Movement, APM, Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Social Democratic Party, SDP, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Peoples Redemption Party, PRP.
Presidential candidates who participated in engagements were former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of ADC, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of APM, Peter Obi of NDC, Adewole Adebayo of SDP and Donald Duke of PRP.
Meetings were held in furtherance of resolutions reached at G100 Opposition Summit, which called for sustained dialogue, stronger cooperation and coordinated approach among opposition parties ahead of 2027 elections.
In statement issued on Wednesday, Salihu Lukman, convener of G100 Summit, who signed on behalf of coalition parties, said consultations were aimed at translating summit’s resolutions into practical steps towards opposition cooperation.
According to statement, engagements provided platform for party leaders and presidential candidates to discuss framework for cooperation, identify areas of common ground and consider measures to advance shared democratic agenda.
It added that discussions were driven by need to address Nigeria’s challenges through collaboration across party lines, stressing that country’s future, citizens’ welfare and credibility of elections should take precedence over narrow political interests.
“Consultations remain ongoing,” statement said, adding that further engagements would build on G100 resolutions and commitment to opposition that is organised, responsible and capable of working together in national interest.
Coalition said Nigerians would be informed of substantive decisions and agreed next steps as deliberations progressed.
Although consultations signal efforts by opposition parties to strengthen cooperation ahead of 2027 polls, statement did not disclose any agreement on joint presidential candidate, merger or formal electoral alliance.
Statement was signed by Lukman on behalf of coalition parties, under slogan, “For God and Country.”
