Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen have killed 18 people in Iye village, in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

According to Locals the incident happened about 7pm on Sunday, May 21, 2023.

The attack coincided with Iye Market day when people were busy with trading activities.

The residents also said that many people were wounded during the attack on the village located behind the Joseph Sarwuaan Tarka University Makurdi (JOSTUM). 

Christopher Waku, the Security Adviser of Guma LGA, who confirmed the incident on Monday, said 18 people were killed during the attack. “

18 people were killed at Iye village in Guma LGA yesterday (Sunday) between 6-7pm. The village is after Uniagric (JOSTUM). 

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Catherine Anene, who confirmed the attack, said that one of the attackers was killed. 

 Meanwhile, 17 bodies have been recovered so far.  Below are names of the victims:
