Amnesty International has called for end to the “vicious and unlawful killings of civilians,” by Boko Haram while condemning the recent deadly attacks in Maiduguri.
The call followed the devastating suspected suicide IED explosions that occurred at about 1924HRS on 16th March, 2026, at (1) Maiduguri Monday Market, (2) University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) gate, and (3) Post Office Flyover area, Maiduguri,”
In a post shared on its official X handle, the rights group said the coordinated attacks, carried out by Boko Haram, showed a contemptible disregard for human life.
According to Amnesty, the attacks, which occurred on Monday evening, reportedly killed at least 12 people and left more than 50 others injured.
Amnesty said the incidents happened at about 6:30 p.m., when suicide bombers detonated explosives at key locations in the city, including the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the Monday Market, and the Post Office area, one of the busiest parts of Maiduguri.
“These deplorable attacks took place at a time when Muslims were breaking their fast during the holy month of Ramadan and demonstrate complete disregard for human life,” the organisation said.
The group noted that the attacks are part of a worrying trend, alleging that Boko Haram has increased its assaults on civilians since January 2026, including attacks on villages and the abduction of women and girls.
Amnesty therefore called on the insurgent group to stop targeting civilians.
“Boko Haram must end its campaign of vicious and unlawful killings of civilians,” it said.
The organisation also urged Nigerian authorities to take urgent steps to protect people.
The group stressed that more must be done to prevent further attacks.
“The Nigerian authorities must act swiftly and ensure that all civilians are protected,” the statement added.
