Lagos State Governor and Chairman of the South-West Governors Forum, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has assured that governors from the geopolitical zone will honour the late elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, with a befitting funeral.

Governor Sanwo-Olu made this pledge on Tuesday during a condolence visit to the Lekki residence of the late nationalist, where he commiserated with his family.

Accompanied by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. (Mrs.) Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, and other top government officials, Sanwo-Olu described the late Adebanjo as “a true Omoluabi” who built relationships across ethnic and cultural lines.

“On behalf of all South-West Governors, the people, and the government of Lagos State, we’re here to commiserate with the family and celebrate Baba (Chief Ayo Adebanjo) for living a life full of impact and worthy of emulation,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu hailed the late Afenifere leader for his steadfastness in speaking truth to power, his unwavering principles, and his contributions to national unity.

“He was a man who always stood by his convictions and defended them well. More importantly, he was a true Omoluabi. We cannot but celebrate him,” the governor stated.

He further assured that the South-West governors would be actively involved in ensuring a dignified final farewell for the nationalist.

“We have also commiserated with the Afenifere Group, acknowledging that Baba leaves behind big shoes to fill. But because this is a celebration of life, we will participate in one way or another to ensure he receives a befitting homegoing,” Sanwo-Olu affirmed.

While extending prayers for the late Adebanjo’s eternal rest, the governor also expressed condolences over the passing of another elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, who died just four days after Adebanjo.

“Coincidentally today, we learned of the death of another elder statesman, Pa Edwin Clark. Maybe they were communicating. These great men helped shape this country to what it is today. For those of us in leadership positions, this is an opportunity to learn from their legacy and push the nation forward,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a respected nationalist and advocate of true federalism, was a prominent voice in Nigerian politics and Yoruba socio-political affairs.
