The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Rivers State chapter, has directed its members across the 23 local government areas to embark on a seven-day warning strike.
The state president, Clifford Paul, announced that the strike will commence from midnight on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.
This was contained in a circular issued on Monday by the State Secretary, Sunday Adeniran, and addressed to all state officers and branch chairmen of NULGE in the 23 council branches.
According to the circular, all local government employees in the state are directed to withdraw their services immediately until further notice.
The action, the union said, became necessary following what it described as the “callous and unfair” decision of the Chairman of Emohua Local Government Area, Chidi Lloyd, who allegedly denied their members their salaries.
Lloyd, during his first tenure, sacked over 300 workers in the LGA, claiming they were ghost workers.
However, after his first tenure, Governor Siminalayi Fubara directed their reinstatement and payment, questioning the authority that empowered the council chairman to act otherwise.
Last week, Lloyd again sacked 300 workers in the council, having returned for a second term as LG chairman.
The Rivers State president of NULGE warned that at the end of the seven-day warning strike, if Lloyd fails to pay the over 300 workers their salaries, the union will escalate the action into an indefinite strike until the affected workers are paid, insisting that “an injury to one is an injury to all.”
