The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, has scheduled 9 August 2025 for the conduct of fresh Local Government Council Elections in the state..
RSIEC Chairman, retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli, announced the date during a stakeholders’ meeting and the official unveiling of the 2025 Local Government Elections timetable and guidelines at the commission’s headquarters on Aba Road, Port Harcourt.
Addressing stakeholders, Justice Enebeli reaffirmed RSIEC’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, credible, and impartial election, urging political parties to adhere to the rules.
He also outlined the commission’s plans for consultations, sensitisation programmes, and private meetings with political parties to address concerns and enhance the electoral process.
Justice Enebeli described the recent Supreme Court judgment as a temporary setback that would ultimately strengthen the commission in preparation for the August 2025 elections.
The meeting was attended by political party leaders, traditional rulers, security agencies, the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, religious organisations, the media, civil society groups, NGOs, and community-based organisations.
The Supreme Court had on Friday sacked the 23 LGA chairmen, citing a violation of Section 150 of the Electoral Act.
