The Director of the Holy See Press Office of the Roman Curia,Matteo Bruni has said Pope Francis is doing well after surgery for an inflamed large colon.
He gave the update in a statement after the surgery on the Pope on Sunday on Monday while adding that the Pope is expected to spend around seven days recovering in hospital.
Francis “is in good general condition, alert and breathing spontaneously”, spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement, adding that the surgery “lasted about three hours”.
“A stay of about seven days is expected barring complications,” he said.
The pontiff was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital Sunday for a scheduled operation under general anaesthetic for symptomatic diverticular stenosis of the colon.
Afterwards, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said he had “reacted well to the surgery”.
“The Holy Father was admitted in the afternoon to Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic, where he underwent a planned surgery for a diverticular stenosis of the sigmoid portion of the colon in the evening, the statement read.
The Vatican press office told AFP on Monday it expected to issue a fresh medical bulletin around midday (1000 GMT).
Reportedly, this is the first time Pope Francis would be admitted to a hospital since his election in 2013.
President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday sent a get-well message to the Pope ahead of his surgery in a statement by his Spokesperson Garba Shehu.
The President called for prayers from Nigerians and the global community as the Pontiff goes in for this routine operation.
He wishes him a quick recovery.
