Bird flu outbreak has been confirmed in Plateau and Katsina states, raising concerns among poultry farmers and health officials.

The Director of Animal Health in Plateau State, Dr. Shase’et Sipak Dawat, disclosed in an official statement that the outbreak was first reported on January 23, 2025, in the Farin Gada area of Jos North Local Government.

He said the disease affected over 3,000 birds at a poultry farm.

Dr. Dawat expressed concern that the farmer sold some of the infected birds before officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development could intervene.

“Poultry farmers are advised to remain vigilant and maintain strict hygiene to protect their birds,” he stated.

Similarly, Dr. Yau Ishaku, an animal health officer in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, confirmed the outbreak to newsmen.

He revealed that the disease was detected on January 21, 2025.

“It is essential for farmers to restrict access to their farms and maintain proper sanitation to prevent further infections,” Dr. Ishaku emphasized.

He further urged poultry farmers in Malumfashi, Kafur, and Kankara Local Government Areas to implement preventive measures and report any unusual poultry deaths.

The Federal Government had earlier issued a nationwide alert about the outbreak in Kano State, cautioning poultry farmers and veterinary offices to take preventive steps against the disease.
