The Oyo State Government has commenced the demolition of structures encroaching on road reserves across parts of Ibadan, following the expiration of a 14-day eviction notice issued to roadside traders and container operators.
The exercise, which began on Monday, is being led by the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA), the Environmental Task Force, Nigeria Police, Amotekun Corps, and other security agencies.
The Joint Enforcement Team, headed by DCP Francis Ojomo (Rtd.) and the Chief of Staff to the OYRLEA Chairperson, Mrs. Iyabo Akinbode, began clearing the Airport Junction axis through Alakia–Adegbayi towards Old Ife Road. Iron containers, kiosks, makeshift trading structures, and goods placed along walkways and road setbacks were removed.
Chairperson of OYRLEA, Honourable Justice Aderonke Adekemi Aderemi (Rtd.), said the exercise is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to maintain environmental sanity and improve road visibility and safety.
“Our environment must be welcoming and safe for investors. This has always been the utmost desire of our people-oriented Governor, His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on whose mandate we operate,”she stated.
Justice Aderemi explained that the enforcement is particularly important ahead of the forthcoming commissioning of the International Airport, adding that the clearing followed repeated sensitization efforts and media announcements.
The government had first served an eviction notice on October 13, 2025, with a reminder issued last week, urging traders to vacate the affected routes. The deadline elapsed on October 27, 2025.
OYRLEA warned that traders who attempt to return to the cleared areas will be prosecuted, stressing that there will be zero tolerance for re-encroachment.
Residents and business operators along Airport Road, Old Ife Road, and Onipepeye have been advised to relocate permanently to approved business locations.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing environmental and urban orderliness laws across the State.
