Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said that Nigeria loses billions of dollars annually to various forms of criminality particularly piracy and sea robbery.
This he said necessitated the need to enhance our maritime security architecture.
According to Osinbajo, Nigeria’s deployment of the Falcon Eye for maritime security will help in degrading piracy and other crimes in the Gulf of Guinea and beyond.
“The surveillance facility incorporates various sensors located along the nation’s enormous coastline.
“The risks in those areas, insurance premiums from commercial vessels have made maritime trade an unattractive proposition.
“Our economic aspirations and commitment to international trade recognizes that the maritime industry occupies a prominent position in the matrix of our economic interests.
“Between the Deep Blue project and the Falcon Eye, Nigeria will significantly increase its national capabilities in maritime surveillance and criminal interdiction within our territorial waters.”
